Happy Hump Day!!

Started my day off today with a morning run outside. I am training for a half marathon, so running is part of my normal routine these days. I had some extra time this morning, so I actually made myself eggs for breakfast instead of my normal granola bar.

Today at Sullivan was the first day of ELA MCAS, so I was on bathroom duty while the students were testing. If a student wanted to go to the bathroom or get a drink during testing, their teacher would have to flag me down so I could escort the student to and from the bathroom….definitely got my steps in today!!  When there were no students using the bathroom, I worked on making a “Classroom Behavior/Participation Tracking” poster. This is a new classroom management incentive Mrs. Foley and I are going to start to use next quarter to make sure students are ending the year strong.

Once MCAS were over, I read aloud “Percy Jackson: Lightening Theft” to my afternoon classes. From school, I headed straight to our Seminar in Teaching class. Today’s class was focused on teacher self care.  After class, I gave a course evaluation form (CEF) to another education class and then headed to meet Kate and Kat at the pub for our weekly dinners after class.

Welcome to the Workshop!!

From dinner, I went to work at the Writer’s Workshop. I had one session and we brainstormed an outline for her paper on Dante’s Inferno. Now I am doing some work in the library with my roommates until I am ready to go watch some Netflix…my teacher self care!!

Hannah’s Tuesday

Happy Tuesday!!

I am excited to be back blogging this week about my life as a student teacher at Sullivan Middle School. Sullivan starts an hour later than all of the other Worcester Public Schools, so I usually wake up around 6:15am every morning to work out before a day of teaching. Great way to start the day!

After I worked out, I drove home to quickly shower and eat breakfast before heading to school. Today, I needed to leave an extra 10 minutes early to get gas (and make a stop at Starbucks).

 

Today is Autism Awareness Day, so the Life Skills Program at Sullivan asked everyone to wear BLUE in support of Autism Awareness. I wore my HC Autism Awareness shirt (as seen in my selfie). I am a member of this club at HC and during the summer, I am a camp director for kids with Autism, so this day is extremely important to me!!

The ELA MCAS are Wednesday and Thursday this week, so today we played a MCAS Jeopardy review with my three classes. There were 6 different categories- Open Response, Reading Strategies, Poetry&Genres, Grammar&Writing, Terms to Know, and Testing Tips- with multiple questions in each category.

To keep them fully engaged, the winning team would get to pick a prize of their choice. Each team created a team name and had to complete the graphic organizer that went along with the game to not lose points. I was even asking the question on a microphone…the real deal!!

Normally after school on Tuesdays I lifeguard at the Hart pool, but today I got coverage for my shift because I had a phone interview with a school for next year (fingers crossed)!! After my interview, I worked on my “dilemma” paper for our Seminar class tomorrow, made some dinner, and prepared for the most exciting part of my day…This is Us season finale!!

TEP Blog Takeover (Week 9 Day 2)

Sunday March 24, 2019

Today, I got up and went right to Mass at 10:30 with my sister. Usually, I got to 7 PM Mass at Holy Cross with my friends but today was a special day. My cousins just bought a beach house in Newport so my family went to go visit!  My sister and I stopped into this church on the way home. Mass on Sunday always helps me to remember have gratitude for the beautiful life I have been given. I’m so lucky I get the opportunity to be a student teacher and go to my dream college, Holy Cross. Every day is a blessing and a gift. My Catholic faith and my teaching vocation go hand in hand. 

One of the best parts of going home is seeing my dog, Bentley. She is three.

I only live an hour from Newport so it was a short drive over. It was 55 and sunny out and we even drove with the sunroof open. We spent the afternoon touring the house and spending time together. Since they live right on the the Newport Cliff Walk, we made sure to take a walk there. It is so beautiful!

Then, my Grammie treated us to dinner. It was delicious. It was special to have such a fun day spent with family. I’m so grateful we got to spend the day together. Sometimes it is hard to slow down and take time for what we value in life, but I think that days like these are so important and special! I feel refreshed and ready to take on another week of student teaching.

TEP Blog Takeover (Week 9 Day 1)

Today I got to sleep in for the first time in a while. I went to Kimball because my sister is a freshman at Holy Cross at she has guest swipes. We both got omelets! My favorite omelet has feta cheese, tomato, spinach, and onion in it. I have not been to Kimball in months so it was fun to catch up with my sister and spend the morning together.

My dad and brother were in Worcester today and surprised my sister and I with Starbucks coffee. It was so sweet of them!

To do lists are a must for a busy day.

Then, I went back to my apartment and did some laundry. I like doing my laundry on the weekends because it makes the rest of the week so much easier. My friends and I did some homework in a study room in our apartment. I was super productive and got everything but two things done on my to do list.

I baked these gluten free chocolate chip muffins for a special day that I will blog about tomorrow! The secret ingredient is coconut oil instead of butter.

 

 

 

 

My friends all met up at 6:30 PM at Chipotle. I got a bowl with lettuce, brown and white rice, cheese, mild salsa, and sour cream. So yummy!

We also went grocery shopping at Trader Joe’s.
I got all of this stuff for $40! Talk about a bargain.

The last thing I did today was meal prep for this week. I love making my salads and washing all of my fruit ahead of time because it saves me so much time in the mornings.

Hannah’s Friday!!

Happy Friday everyone!!

On Friday mornings, I work as a consultant in the Writer’s Workshop from 11:00-1:00pm. I love working in the Workshop!! I started my sophomore year after taking Professor Kristina Reardon’s course ENGL 387: Composition Theory and Pedagogy. By taking this class, we become trained to help all students at any stage in the writing process. Our goal in the Writer’s Workshop is to help students become confident writers rather than quickly edit paper for grammar. I also work on Sundays from 4:00-7:00pm.

After the Workshop, I had “Asian American Literature” from 2:00-3:15pm-my only class on Fridays!! Then, I went on a run and my friends and I made some cookies.

Tomorrow I am heading to Holy Cross’ Joyce Contemplative Retreat Center for a weekend retreat with my Haiti Immersion group. I will be going to Haiti in January with a group of 12 Holy Cross students. We will be staying at the “Be like Brit” orphanage there to spent time with the kids and build a house during the day. I am super excited!!

Hannah’s Wednesday and Thursday!!

Hello again!!

My Wednesday morning started bright and early at 6:00am to make it to November Project by 6:20am. November Project is a free fitness movement that started in Boston and is now all over the country. Every Wednesday at 5:30am or 6:20am, locals from Worcester “run” the stairs in the Holy Cross football stadium. It always starts my day off great, so I try to go as often as possible.

I had “Pre-Practicum” from 9:00-10:00am and then “Asian American Literature” from 2:00-3:15pm. In between my classes, I worked on my homework in the Music Library. After class, I went home to quickly change and head up to the Hart pool to lifeguard from 4:00-6:30pm. Then, I went home to make dinner and do some homework before I went to see “The Hate U Give.”

I went with some fellow TEPers (Kat, Kate and Suzanne as seen in the picture below)!! We all read the book in Professor Fisher’s “Multicultural Education” class last semester. We all LOVED the book, so we were a little disappointed in the movie because they changed it from the book. It was a good movie, so you should definitely go see it, but it’s not the same as the book.

This morning (Thursday), I had  “New Testament”  from 9:30-10:45am and “Renaissance Marvels and Monsters” from 11:00-12:15pm. After class, I went up to the Hart Pool from 1:00-3:00pm for my last lifeguarding shift of the week. Then, my roommate and I went on a walk because it was such a nice day out today!!

I normally tutor at The Nativity School of Worcester through SPUD, but we didn’t have it today so I had a free afternoon. So, I went for a run, made some dinner and I’m working on some homework in my kitchen now.

Hannah’s Tuesday!!

Hey everyone!!

Tuesdays are long days for me because I have class for the majority of the day. First, in the morning, I have “The New Testament” from 9:30-10:45 am and then I have “Renaissance Marvels and Monsters” from  11:00-12:15 pm. My group and I gave our presentation on The Masque of Blackness during class today and I think it went really well!! After these two classes, I went for a quick run outside because it started to rain A LOT. Then, I did some homework in my house before my “Methods in Teaching” class from 3:30-6:00pm.  After that class, I came home to make some dinner and work on the rest of my homework due tomorrow.

Here are pictures of my off campus house (where I spent most of my day today to avoid the rain when I wasn’t in class).  I live on Boyden Street (the street parallel to College Street), so it is super close to campus. I can walk to anywhere on campus in under ten minutes. I love living off campus!! I live with two of my friends and our house was just renovated so it is super nice.

Now I need to finish my homework, so I can be ready to live stream “This is Us” with my roommates…my favorite part of Tuesday 🙂

Hannah’s Monday!!

Hi everyone, my name is Hannah Trueman and I am taking over the blog this week!! I am a senior English major in the Teacher Education Program.

Every Monday, Maureen, Ally and I observe at Sullivan Middle School, where we will be student teaching next semester. I have been observing Mrs. Foley’s 7th grade ELA classes, which I will be taking over next semester.  Today, I observed a seminar class, an ELA class, and we ended up leaving a little earlier today because all of our teachers had  prep periods at the end of the day.

After I got back from Sullivan, I went for a run around the neighborhoods off campus.  This is always one of my favorite parts of my day!! I try to run off campus as much as I can, especially before it gets too cold and the ground is covered in snow…which will be very soon.

After my run, I had a quick turn around time to get up to the Hart pool where I am a lifeguard. I lifeguard at the pool three times a week for two hours at a time.

After my shift, I went home to make myself a quick dinner before I had to meet with a group for our presentation tomorrow. We met in Hogan at Cool Beans to make our Powerpoint on The Masque of Blackness for our Renaissance Marvels and Monsters course. Now, I am sitting in Dinand working on finishing all my homework for my three classes tomorrow…

Happy “Friday Junior!”

After a week of rainy weather, the sun finally came out!☼
After work from 8:30-12, I met up with friends for lunch. Then, I edited my resume in the library for a workshop next week.
The history department always has free books for us– I always grab ones that look interesting or I could use for my new class!
After a meeting with my professor, I ran into my friend, Tara, in Hogan. I voted for the Spring Concert 2019 genre!

SPUD TIME!!!

I am so excited to share about my SPUD (Student Programs for Urban Development) site, Ascension After School Program. The students, grades 1-6, go to Union Hill School and are so filled with life, love, and energy. This program truly gave me the confidence to change my major and affirm that I wanted to be a teacher. I have been going to this site weekly from 3-5 PM for four years now. We spend the first half of the afternoon playing with the kids in free time. Then, we work on homework together. Sister Pat, who runs the program, was actually my dad’s first grade teacher☺

College Day in the Life + Apartment Tour!

TEP Blog Takeover (Week 1 Day 3)

Happy hump day! Here was today’s schedule:

9:00 AM: Pre-Practicum– Today, we learned about an active learning strategy, Four Corners. We discussed an article on the Finnish education system and compared it to ours. When I saw that my professor made my class cookies, I knew it was going to be an awesome day!

The cookies were SOO good.

10:00 AM: 20th Century America– We submitted hard copies of our 5-7 page papers on the Redemption era and continued our discussion on the Gilded Age.

11:00-1:30: Black Biographies Seminar– In class, we learned about Marcus Garvey’s life. Then, we made Jamaican patties for lunch! My professor always makes us food because our class is during lunch time– it’s the best.

2:00-3:15: Urban Education– We learned about what solidarity means.

After classes, I met my younger sister, Catherine, at the gym to go for a run. Then, I did homework at Starbucks with a friend.

In addition to my bedroom and our living room/dining area, my three roommates and I also have a full kitchen (with a dishwasher, fridge, and sink), a bathroom, and a shower.

Pro-Tip: You can tell how long it is going to take you to get to school when you live on city-side of the building. This video shows how you can see the traffic on the major highway, Interstate 290, that takes you across Worcester. It’s great!
